Want to Test Your Site Without a Mouse For Accessibility’s Sake? These Keyboard Shortcuts Will Help

Once thing that’s vital to testing the accessibility of a web app or site is running through it without using a mouse. If you can successfully work a site or app without touching the mouse, you’ve gone a long way towards ensuring that your site is available to a wide range of people and devices.

One thing that’s difficult about that process is most of us rely far too much on the mouse when browsing. Which is where these lists of keyboard shortcuts for Firefox, and Internet Explorer come in handy.

Take a look at these and you should be able to browse like a champ using nothing but the keyboard, which will allow you to put your site through its proper paces.

They’ll also help if you just want to be more efficient when browsing. Just like in Photoshop, using keyboard shortcuts instead of mouse movements saves both time and wear and tear on your mousing hand/wrist.

I use a lot of them. I obviously use the common ones (Ctrl + P, Ctrl + S, Ctrl + T, Ctrl + R, etc) all the time, but I find these Firefox shortcuts especially helpful. Those marked with an asterisk work in Both Firefox and IE:

Back Backspace *
Forward Shift+Backspace (Alt +Right Arrow works in both)
Zoom Reset Ctrl +0 *
Undo Close Tab Ctrl +Shift+T *
Select Tab ( 1 to 8 ) Ctr+( 1 to 8 ) *
Select Last Tab Ctrl +9 *
Clear Recent History Ctrl+Shift+Del *

And while we’re at it, here are Safari, Chrome and Opera
